OBX Tunes: No Doubt - "It's the End of the World as we Know It"

Welcome back to another edition of our OBX Tunes series. The holiday tracks are past us and I won't make you listen to anymore overplayed Christmas songs anymore (at least until next December). Whenever I think about New Year's Eve songs, one particular musical performance always comes to mind. On the brink of the new millennium during MTV's yearly New Year's Eve bash, No Doubt did a live performance of R.E.M.'s hit song   It's the End of the World as we Know It (And I Feel Fine). The song was about all of the uncertainly the new millennium was going to bring: destruction of all electronic devices, the end of our power grid, extinction of humans? Luckily none of these things actually happened, and at 12:01 am on January 1st, 2000, everything was exactly the same as it was a few minutes prior. The song appeared on R.E.M.'s 1987 album  Document , the 1988 compilation  Eponymous , and the 2006 compilation  And I Feel Fine... The Best of the I.R.S Years 1982–1987 . It was released as a single in November 1987, reaching No. 69 US Billboard Hot 100 and later reaching No. 39 in the UK singles chart on its re-release in December 1991. No Doubt's performance was spectacular and they played right into the New Year - one of MTV's best ideas for a NYE performance. Hope you enjoyed this week's tune and be on the look out for a best of OBX Tunes post in the next few days. [youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ei1BZwb4wik&w=560&h=420]
