Outer Banks Beach Report: 12.20.13 - Warm December Day
Good afternoon everyone this is Brandon from Seaside Vacations
back with another Outer Banks beach report. It's Friday, December 20th, and it isn't feeling much like December today on the OBX.
The picture above and video below are from earlier this morning just south of Jennette's Pier
in Nags Head, North Carolina.
If you step outside today and had no idea what time of year it was, you might think it's late spring or early fall. There's plenty of sunshine, a high temperature of 64 degrees this afternoon, and no chance of rain in the forecast.
On average, the late fall/winter months are typically mild on the OBX, they're not usually THIS warm. While parts of the Midwest and Northeast are preparing for the possibility of snow, visitors and locals on the OBX are picking out t-shirts and shorts to wear today.
Although the surface air is quite warm today, the Atlantic Ocean remains a chilly 49 degrees. Waves are about knee cap high and semi-clean. I spotted one surfer this morning near Jennette's Pier who caught a few small waves while I was watching.
He was dressed from head to toe in a black wet suit to stay warm. Could be fun to paddle out for a few waves if you can find a nice sandbar today. Be sure to wear plenty of gear to keep you warm.
Great day for surf or pier fishing on the Outer Banks given the ideal weather conditions. I'd expect some good Trout or Drum bite today and into the weekend.
You can check out our live webcam
that's located near Jennette's Pier if you'd like to view the ocean right now.
Thanks for reading today's beach report, we hope to see you soon.... have fun!
