DNA will tell the tale of wild horses
Many who see the wild horses that roam the Outer Banks conclude they're a rare and different breed. Now science may confirm it. An equine genetics specialist is collecting genetic material – 60 strands of hair from horses in the herds on Shackleford Banks and around Corolla – to analyze where these postcard-perfect icons of North Carolina originated. It’s hoped research will reinforce studies conducted on the horses in the 1990s that indicated they have Spanish blood – possibly descending from a lineage of horses brought by Spanish explorers in the 16th century. Blood tests found a link, but they may not be as definitive as the DNA testing now being conducted. If the genetic tests back the theory that the smallish horses on Shackleford Banks and around Corolla descend from Spanish mounts, it might help the animals, which are under constant threat of outgrowing their limited habitats. A Colonial pedigree would make them more attractive to horse owners eager to adopt exotic breeds. To find out more, visit http://www.newsobserver.com/150/story/569577.html.

THE STRUGGLING ECONOMY EVOKES THE HOLIDAY SPIRIT AT SEASIDE VACATIONS
KITTY HAWK, NC (March 3, 2009)—Seaside Vacations chose to forgo a holiday celebration for 2008 to focus their resources on a local charity in need of help. In lieu of a holiday party, the property management company made a donation to the Interfaith Community Outreach.
The Interfaith Community Outreach (ICO) is an interfaith organization of volunteers who are supported by more than 20 local faith communities and network partners. The ICO provides emergency gap services and referrals to people on the Outer Banks and surrounding areas who are in need of assistance. ICO Services Include assistance with: food, utilities, transportation, shelter, medical care, home rehabilitation, child care, and community disaster recovery.
Due to the sluggish economy this year, the ICO is stretched further than usual. The ICO is almost $25,000 over budget as a result the difficult times many local residents are having. Volunteers and donations are greatly appreciated.
Instead of a fully catered party to celebrate the successes of 2008 and welcome in a great 2009, the employees of Seaside Vacations felt it would be more appropriate given the time of year and the current economic slowdown to help those who may be in need. A check was donated on December 19, 2008 during an office pot-luck lunch.
