The Artrageous Art Extravaganza is an annual community-wide celebration of the arts, and largest fundraising event for the Dare County Arts Council. The Cycle North Carolina Fall Ride

The Cycle North Carolina Fall Ride is a weeklong bicycle tour to be held in October 1-8, 2011. Cycle North Carolina is one of the most successful bicycle rides in the United States and has been voted the "Best Biking in America" by the League of American Bicyclists. The Cycle North Carolina Fall Ride is not a race, but a leisurely ride across the state making overnight stops in North Carolina communities. The 2011 route is from Elkin to Corolla. The last overnight stop route this year will stop in Manteo on Friday, October 7, 2011. Race organizers are encouraging all riders and their families to attend the First Friday celebration at the Downtown Manteo Waterfront during their last night in Manteo, NC. cnc.ncsports.org/fallCNCRide/

10th Annual Oink N’ Oyster Roast

Sponsored by First Flight Rotary. Noon - 4 p.m. Longboard’s Island Grill, Kitty Hawk. Part of the proceeds from the event will be given to the Outer Banks Community Foundation for Hurricane Irene Disaster Relief. Tickets are $25 and $7 for children and can be purchased from any First Flight Rotary club member, on-line at oinkandoyster.org or the day of the event. 25th Annual Outer Banks Stunt Kite Competition

Wright Brothers Memorial (mp 8), Kill Devil Hills, presented by Kitty Hawk Kites. This competitive fly is on the Eastern League Circuit for sport kite flying and is also sanctioned by the American Kiting Association. Throughout the weekend non-competitors can enjoy workshops, demonstrations and kite making for kids. The highlights of this event include graceful kite ballet competitions set to music, and fast paced team flying that blends both kite control and speed. Meet the cast and crew of “Shepherd of the Ocean” and the archaeologists who will be working on Roanoke Island during “Roanoke Colonies Archaeology and History Week.” Learn more about what has been found in the past excavations and where they will be digging.

College of the Albemarle, Dare Campus. 7 p.m. “Copper Matters: or How Thomas Hariot May Have Saved Jamestown” by Nicholas M. Luccketti. Luccketti is a FCF board member and research vice president. Since the 1990s, he has worked numerous archaeological investigations on Roanoke Island. He also is one of the principals of the James River Institute for Archaeology, and has led numerous research efforts focused on the early history of Virginia.

College of the Albemarle, Dare Campus. 7 p.m. “Roanoke After Raleigh: Resettlement of the Island in the 17th and 18th Centuries” by Phillip W. Evans. Evans is president and co-founder of the FCF. Now in his second career as an attorney in private practice concentrating on juvenile and mental health law in Durham, he focused on colonial and pre-colonial American history in his first career — most of which was spent at Fort Raleigh National Historic Site where he served the National Park Service as a Park Ranger/Historian for 17 years.

Roanoke Colonies Archaeology and History Week
October 13
College of the Albemarle, Dare Campus. 7 p.m. “Raleigh’s Other Lost Colonies” by Dr. Eric Klingelhofer. Klingelhofer has led archaeological research efforts at sites related to Sir Walter Raleigh in Ireland and the Caribbean, and since the 1990s, has worked numerous digs on Roanoke Island. In addition, he was senior archaeologist during the Colonial Williamsburg excavations under Ivor Noel Hume. Currently, he is a professor of history at Mercer University in Georgia.

Hosting the event is Count Sharkula who always scares up lots of ghoulish fun. Fall Coat Harvest

Hosted by Kitty Hawk United Methodist Church and the merchants of The Marketplace at Southern Shores. The Fall Coat Harvest is an event occurring during the month of October to collect and provide people in need with a warm coat free of charge. The coats collected throughout the month of October and will be distributed on October 29, 2011 from 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. at 5551 N. Croatan Hwy, Southern Shores, NC (next to Bonnie's Bagels at The Marketplace). A jump castle will be set up for the kids, courtesy of the merchants of The Marketplace, and kids are also encouraged to trick-or-treat throughout the shopping center.
