Laura Barnes Shipwreck
Timbers of one of the last sailing schooners built in America lie at Coquina Beach, off NC Route 12, south of Nags Head. Lost Colony Outdoor Drama
A 400-year-old mystery haunts Roanoke Island. Here, 117 men, women and children lived for a short time, then vanished without a trace. Bodie Island Lighthouse
The lighthouse in the Cape Hatteras National Seashore was completed in 1870. The tower is not open to the public, but during the summer the restored keeper’s quarters serve as a visitor center. Cape Hatteras Lighthouse

Currituck Beach Lighthouse
The Currituck Beach Lighthouse began service in 1875. The 162 ft. (214 steps) tower is open to the public. Ocracoke Lighthouse
Ocracoke is home of the oldest operating lighthouse in NC and the second oldest operating lighthouse in the nation. Built in 1823 to mark the inlet, the lighthouse is now managed by the National Park Service. Grounds are open all year, but the lighthouse is not open for touring. No admission fee. Alligator River Wildlife Refuge
The US Fish and Wildlife Service has marked 15 miles of canoe and kayak trails, a five-mile wildlife drive and two half-mile nature trails in its 150,000-acre refuge off US Route 64 on the Dare County mainland. The NC Aquarium
