Outer Banks Labor Day Activities to Enjoy

Whether you plan on escaping for a long weekend or are finally planning that full week vacation after a long, busy summer, Labor Day is the perfect time for an Outer Banks beach getaway. Since most people already have the day off, it’s a very popular day for travelers. In fact, WalletHub says that at least a quarter of all Americans will travel out of town for the holiday so if you’re planning on hitting the beach, here are a few ways you can celebrate Labor Day on the Outer Banks!

Hit the Beach
Bailey at the Beach in Cape Hatteras

September is one of the best months to be on the beach! Crowds have thinned out a bit since it is no longer the busy peak season, yet, the temperatures are amazing and the ocean is still warm enough to enjoy. The average temperatures for the month range between 68 and 82° Fahrenheit while the average water temperature sits around the mid to high 70s. The Outer Banks during Labor Day weekend has the perfect beach weather so you can enjoy everything from swimming, beachcombing, and even working on your tan.

Explore the Trails
OBX Maritime Forests

Because it’s a little cooler than the middle of summer but still warm enough to be outside, September is the perfect time to get out and explore everything the Outer Banks has to offer. Traverse through natural marshlands and a unique landscape while you check out the local flora and fauna on land, in the sky, and in the water. From ospreys to otters, you never know what you might see, which makes it a fun activity for kids of all ages! To get started, check out the Nags Head Woods Ecological Preserve, the Duck Boardwalk, Bodie Island Lighthouse boardwalk, and the Buxton Woods, just to name a few. Whether you prefer a casual stroll through the woods or a vigorous hike that will work up a sweat, there is a perfect trail for you here on the OBX.

Enjoy a Cookout
Grilling for Family

Most of our vacation rentals feature either a charcoal grill or a gas grill which means Labor Day is the perfect time for an outdoor cookout! Just imagine spending the day relaxing in your rental’s private pool and then gathering around the large dining table or outdoor picnic table to enjoy some freshly grilled burgers and hot dogs. For the true seafood lover, try grilling up your catch of the day or pick up some shrimp and fish from the local seafood market!

Take a Sunset Cruise

One thing you’ll learn when you visit the Outer Banks is that the sunsets here are not like any sunsets you’ve seen before in your life. From the rich purples and deep reds that cover the sky to the reflection of the sinking sun on the sound, you will be mesmerized from the moment the day reaches dusk. Although there are plenty of places to watch the sun go down over the water, arguably one of the most enjoyable places to watch a sunset is from a boat in the sound so you can experience the sunset literally right in front of you. Plus, as a Seaside Vacations guest, you are eligible for discounts through Club Seaside at several charter companies that offer sunset cruises—and we highly suggest you give it a go!
