Contemplating Christmas on the Outer Banks this year? There are more than a few exciting events and fun festivals on the island, so many that it might be hard to choose which to go to. No worries! We've done all the legwork and pulled together our round-up of family fun entertainment to get in the spirit!
The Winter Lights celebration is hands down, one of the most popular events of the holiday season. The gardens are aglow with hundreds of thousands of lights that are dotted throughout the gardens, a cozy fire pit, and if you're lucky, a visit from Santa. There's no better way to immerse yourself in the spirit of the season.

The Cape Hatteras Lighthouse will be open to the public for a free Winter Climb on Saturday December 9, 2017 from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm.
What's more magical than a trek up the lighthouse on a crisp winter morning? Volunteers from the Outer Banks Lighthouse Society and Cape Hatteras National Seashore park rangers look forward to greeting guests at the lighthouse and sharing some of the rich history of this national landmark. Children who wish to climb the lighthouse must be at least 42" tall, and children under 12 years of age must be escorted by a person at least 16 years old
The Manteo Preservation Trust will host the 13th Annual Holiday Tour of Homes in Manteo on Saturday, December 2nd 2017. Each venue featured on the tour will be festively decorated and open for guests to enjoy. The tour highlights several of the historic island homes, new construction built by the "Manteo way of life" guidelines and a renovated dual-purpose office/home building plus more. Tour check-in takes place at the Outer Banks Distillery, and light refreshments will be served there.
Tickets are $20 each and may be purchased the day of the tour beginning at 11:30am. Participants will be given a brochure that includes a map of the tour route. Park your car and take a walking or biking the tour to make the most of the sidewalks, fresh air and festive vibe. Shout out to Manteo Cyclery for donating the use of their bikes during the tour on a first come, first serve basis.
No OBXmas is complete without a visit to the Poulos house, which has been featured on The Today Show and HGTV. This Christmas light spectacular takes 12 weeks to set up and over $3,500 in energy bills every month. Viewing of the Poulos Family Christmas lights is held through December 31st.
With two annual events: The Lighting of the Town Tree traditionally takes place the 1st Friday night in December on the Manteo Waterfront, featuring hot chocolate and holiday music sung by children of all ages. You can't help but feel as if you've stepped into a Norman Rockwell painting. The Annual Christmas Parade follows the day after the tree lighting, complete with bands, floats, and all the trappings of the season on the streets of downtown Manteo.
Back by popular demand, the Town of Duck will ring in the holiday season with this weekend-long celebration of all things festive. Local shops and merchants will keep their doors open late for holiday shoppers, and local restaurants will sponsor a Tapas crawl, in addition to a variety of fun activities to help spread some holiday cheer.
