History of Hatteras, NC

Hatteras is one of the areas on Hatteras Island that has not experienced a name change throughout its history. English settlers first arrived in the 1700s and named the area for the local indigneous people. Since then, it has been a hotspot for fishing and environmental activism. During the American Civil War, Hatteras was also an important location for fighting between the Union and the Confederate forces and it was eventually won by the Union in 1861. During this time period, the Union army established the Hotel D'Afrique, a refuge for enslaved African Americans during the Civil War. Though there are no remaining buildings or remnants of the haven community, the Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum commemorates the refuge's importance as part of the National Park Service's National Underground Network to Freedom. Since that time, Hatteras has continued to grow at its own pace. And while it is now a tourist destination and a popular place for outdoorsmen and lovers of natura, alike, it remains a quiet, peaceful place to spend an idyllic beach vacation.
