Dare County was previously under a Tropical Storm Watch for Hurricane Erin. The system has now been upgraded to a Tropical Storm Warning. While the storm is expected to remain offshore, it may bring periods of rain, strong winds, coastal flooding, hazardous surf, and overwash to parts of Dare County beginning Wednesday morning, August 20, and continuing through Thursday, August 21. We are closely monitoring the situation and working with Dare County Emergency Management to provide updates as they become available.

What to Expect

  • Weather conditions are expected to worsen Wednesday morning and continue through Thursday.

  • Travel may be difficult or unsafe during this time—please plan to avoid driving on Wednesday and Thursday.

  • Many local businesses are expected to close Wednesday as conditions deteriorate and will remain closed until the storm passes.. Please complete any final preparations ahead of time.

How to Prepare

  • Stock up on groceries, water, and household essentials.

  • Have indoor activities ready—board games, puzzles, or movies—to make the best of your time indoors.

  • Flooding is possible in low-lying areas and along roadways. As a precaution, you may want to park your vehicle on higher ground or in a driveway less likely to flood. Avoid driving through standing water, as it may be deeper than it looks.

  • Secure or bring inside any loose outdoor items such as trash cans, beach gear, and patio furniture.

  • Team members will be working remotely and available by phone to assist with questions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will there be an evacuation?

Currently, no evacuations are planned for Corolla, Duck, Southern Shores, Kitty Hawk, Kill Devil Hills, Nags Head, or Manteo. Dare County Emergency Management will make and announce any evacuation decisions. If that happens, we’ll notify you immediately.

What should I do if flooding occurs?

Flooding may happen in low-lying areas and along roadways. If water levels rise, move your vehicle to higher ground if it is safe to do so. Avoid driving through standing water, as it can be deeper than it appears. Stay indoors and wait until conditions improve. If water happens to enter the home, move to a dry area on higher ground and remain there until it’s safe to move about again.

Do I need to do anything at the rental home?

Yes, we kindly ask guests to bring in or secure outdoor items like trash cans, beach gear, and patio furniture. This helps keep you, the property, and your belongings safe.

Can I add travel insurance now?

Unfortunately, travel insurance (Red Sky) cannot be added to existing or incoming reservations.

Will check-in or check-out be affected?

At this time, check-in and check-out remain on schedule unless Dare County Emergency Management issues new guidance. We’ll notify you right away if anything changes.

Will we lose power?

Power outages are possible during strong wind and flooding events. Please charge your phones and devices in advance, and keep flashlights handy just in case.

What about trash pickup?

Trash and recycling schedules may be disrupted by the storm. If pickup is delayed, please secure all cans and bags to prevent debris.

Can maintenance come if we have an issue?

Our offices will be closed Thursday, but our team will be answering phones remotely. For safety reasons, in-person maintenance cannot be completed until after conditions improve.

Are local businesses and restaurants open?

Many local businesses plan to close starting Wednesday. We recommend picking up groceries and supplies ahead of time and preparing to enjoy indoor activities at your rental home.
