Event: Anniversary of the Mirlo Rescue

Date: August 16

Location: Chicamacomico Lifesaving Station, Rodanthe

About: Come celebrate the anniversary of one of the most important lifesaving events in Coast Guard history. In 1918, the British tanker the Mirlo hit a German mine and exploded, rendering the crew of 52 people in danger. Capt John Allen Midgett and a crew of surfmen launched their surfboat and were able to save 42 members of the crew. Each member of the lifesaving crew were awarded a Gold Lifesaving Medal and a Victory Medal from the British government. This annual celebration commemorates these brave men and offers guests a deep-dive into the Chicamacomico Lifesaving Station with reenactments, tours, and more!
