A golf cart is one of the easiest ways to slow down on the Outer Banks. You can roll to the beach access, grab coffee in the village, or cruise the neighborhood at sunset without fighting for a parking spot. Before you book, though, there's one thing every visitor should know: the rules change from town to town, and sometimes from one neighborhood to the next. Here's the local rundown.

Quick answer

Yes, you can rent a golf cart on the Outer Banks, but where you can drive it depends on the type of cart and the town. Street-legal low-speed vehicles (LSVs) can generally use roads with a speed limit of 35 mph or less. Standard golf carts are generally allowed on neighborhood and side roads in Duck and Corolla, but not in Nags Head, Kill Devil Hills, or Southern Shores. Drivers must be at least 16, and you should always check the Dare County golf cart and LSV map before you head out. Golf carts are prohibited on major state highways and nighttime public roads.

Golf cart vs. LSV: what you're actually renting

Most OBX rental companies rent low-speed vehicles, or LSVs. They look like golf carts, but they're registered, insured, and equipped to meet North Carolina's requirements for street use, including headlights, taillights, mirrors, and seat belts. That's what lets them drive on public roads where the speed limit is 35 mph or less. LSVs carry the same requirements as passenger cars, so plan on a valid driver's license behind the wheel.

A standard golf cart isn't street-legal in North Carolina. Where towns allow them at all, they're limited to neighborhood streets and side roads, and drivers on public roads must be at least 16.

When you're comparing rental companies, ask which one you're getting. It makes a big difference in where you can go.

Where can you drive a golf cart on the Outer Banks?

Here's how the rules break down by area. HOAs and private communities can set stricter rules than the town, so check your neighborhood too.

Area Street-legal LSVs Standard golf carts
Corolla Allowed on roads with a speed limit of 35 mph or less Neighborhoods and side roads only. Not on Route 12, though you may cross it where the limit is 35 mph or less. Corolla Light allows LSVs only; Ocean Sands and Ocean Lake allow neither.
Duck Allowed throughout Duck, including Route 12 where the limit is 35 mph or less Neighborhoods and side roads. Not on or across Route 12 outside Duck Village. Sanderling allows neither.
Southern Shores, Kill Devil Hills & Nags Head Allowed on roads with a speed limit of 35 mph or less Not allowed
Kitty Hawk & Hatteras Island villages Rules vary by village and even by street. Check the Dare County map before you drive.

Some speed limits change seasonally, so a road that's open to LSVs in the off-season may not be in summer, or the other way around. Follow the posted limit on the day you drive. Dare County keeps an interactive Golf Cart & LSV Road Map that shows exactly which streets allow which vehicles.

How to book a golf cart for your OBX vacation

  1. Book your rental home first. Golf carts make the most sense in walkable areas like Duck Village, Corolla, and the neighborhoods off the bypass. Browse Duck vacation rentals or Corolla vacation rentals if a cart is a big part of your plan.
  2. Check your neighborhood's rules. Some communities don't allow carts or LSVs at all. If you're not sure about your rental's neighborhood, ask our team before you book a cart.
  3. Reserve early for summer. Carts book up for peak weeks, especially June through August and holiday weekends.
  4. Ask about delivery and charging. Many companies will drop the cart off at your rental. Ask how charging works and where you should park it.
  5. Use your guest perks. Seaside guests can save on street-legal carts with our ZoomAround golf cart rental offer.

Local tips for driving a golf cart on the Outer Banks

Park like a car. LSVs need a legal parking spot just like any other vehicle, unless an area is marked for golf carts. Beach access lots fill up fast in summer, so go early.

Keep everyone seated. Don't overload the cart, keep passengers seated, and buckle up where seat belts are provided. Never drive impaired. The same laws apply as in a car.

Golf carts don't go on the beach. If you're dreaming of driving on the sand up in the 4x4 area, that takes a four-wheel-drive vehicle and a permit. Our OBX beach driving guide covers how it works.

Prefer pedal power? Bikes are another great way to get around the villages. Check out our ultimate guide to biking the Outer Banks.
