Steeped in American history and wrapped in small-town coastal charm, Roanoke Island is one of the most rewarding destinations on the Outer Banks. Located between the Croatan Sound and Roanoke Sound—just minutes from Nags Head—this island blends centuries-old stories with walkable waterfronts, family-friendly attractions, museums, gardens, shops, and some of the best dining scenes on the OBX.

Made up of the historic towns of Manteo and Wanchese, Roanoke Island offers a slower pace, rich cultural experiences, and easy access to everything the Outer Banks has to offer—making it a must-visit for first-time and returning OBX guests alike.

The Lost Colony

Roanoke Island is best known as the site of America’s first English settlement attempts in the late 1500s. Sponsored by Sir Walter Raleigh, these expeditions culminated in the mysterious disappearance of the 1587 settlement—now famously known as The Lost Colony.

Notable moments include:

  • The arrival of Wanchese and Manteo in England after the 1584 scouting voyage.
  • The birth of Virginia Dare, the first English child born in the New World.
  • Governor John White’s return to find the colony abandoned, with only the word “CROATOAN” carved into a palisade

The fate of the colonists remains unknown, inspiring centuries of research, folklore, and fascination that continue today.

Civil War & Freedmen’s Colony

During the Civil War, Roanoke Island became a Union stronghold following the Battle of Roanoke Island (1862). By 1863, it was also home to the Freedmen’s Colony, a thriving community of formerly enslaved African Americans. At its peak, the colony housed more than 3,000 residents and included schools, churches, and businesses.

Today, the site is commemorated at Fort Raleigh National Historic Site and recognized as part of the National Underground Railroad Network.
