Quick Answer

November is the Outer Banks' quietest, most budget-friendly fall month, with crisp beach days, the late-fall fishing run, and the first holiday events. Big 2026 dates include the Outer Banks Marathon Weekend (Nov 6–8), Outer Banks Veterans Week (Nov 9–15), Thanksgiving turkey trots (Nov 26), and Hangin' With Santa and Kites With Lights (Nov 27–28).

Why November Is the Outer Banks' Best-Kept Secret

Ask a local when they finally get the beach to themselves, and a lot of us will say November. The summer crowds are long gone, the October festival weekends have wrapped up, and the whole coast slows down to an easy pace. You can walk for miles at sunrise and see more pelicans than people.

It's also one of the best values of the year. Rental rates drop, more homes allow shorter stays, and Thanksgiving week is a great excuse to gather the whole family under one roof. If you've ever wanted to host the holiday somewhere new, a big oceanfront house with a full kitchen is hard to beat.

What November Weather Is Really Like

Expect sweater weather with plenty of sun. Early November highs usually land in the 60s, sliding into the upper 50s by Thanksgiving, with chilly evenings that are perfect for a fire pit or a hot tub. The ocean cools from the low 60s into the 50s over the month, so most visitors save the swimming for the pool and spend beach time looking for shells.

Two things to plan around: the wind and the light. Breezy days are common, so pack a windbreaker. And daylight saving time ends on Sunday, November 1, which means sunsets come around 5 p.m. Plan outdoor adventures for the morning and early afternoon, then settle in for a cozy evening. Check our Outer Banks weather page before you pack.

Run (or Cheer) at Outer Banks Marathon Weekend

The TowneBank Outer Banks Marathon is the oldest continuously running road race on the Outer Banks, and it's a favorite for first-timers and PR chasers because the course is fast and flat (for the most part). Runners wind past maritime forest and the Wright Brothers National Memorial on the way to the finish in Manteo. The weekend also includes the Southern Fried Half Marathon plus a 5K, 8K, and Color Fun Run, so everyone in the family can participate.

Marathon Weekend Tips:

  • Packet pickup happens at the two-day sports and fitness expo, so arrive by Friday if you're racing.
  • Strollers and pets aren't allowed on the course. Plan to cheer from the sidelines with the pups.
  • The post-race party has live music, free barbecue for runners, and a beer garden for the 21+ crowd.
  • Active duty and retired military members can save on registration. Check the race site for the current code.
  • Expect rolling road closures on race morning, especially on Roanoke Island. Leave extra time if you're not running.

Honor Those Who Served During Veterans Week

Outer Banks Veterans Week runs November 9–15, 2026. Organized by Dare Arts, this annual event celebrates veterans and their families through the arts, with concerts, writing workshops, ceremonies, and special offers from Southern Shores to Hatteras Island. Many events are centered in downtown Manteo, so it pairs nicely with a stroll along the waterfront, a visit to Roanoke Island Festival Park, and dinner on the Manteo boardwalk. If you're traveling with a veteran, this is a meaningful week to plan around.

Fish the Late-Fall Run

November is when serious anglers come to the Outer Banks. As the water cools, big red drum gather off Hatteras Island and the points and inlets come alive. Speckled trout and puppy drum stay active in the sounds and creeks, and striped bass start showing up as the month goes on. Pier fishing, surf casting, and inshore charters out of Oregon Inlet and Hatteras all stay productive well past summer. Read our guide to fishing on Hatteras Island to plan your spots.

November Fishing Tips:

Warm Up With Oysters and Comfort Food

Cooler weather means it's prime time for local oysters. Watch for raw bar specials, steamed buckets, and community oyster roasts popping up as the season gets going. It's also chowder season. Order a bowl of clear-broth Hatteras-style clam chowder and you'll understand why locals are so loyal to it.

Many restaurants switch to off-season hours in November, so check before you head out. A few local favorites close for a week or two to rest up before the holidays.

Spend Thanksgiving at the Beach

Thanksgiving falls on Thursday, November 26, in 2026, and a growing number of families are trading the crowded dining room for an oceanfront house with room for everyone. Our large homes and event homes have big kitchens and long dining tables built for a holiday feast.

How to Plan a Beach Thanksgiving:

  • Earn your pie: Join the Tipsy Turkey Beer Mile in Kill Devil Hills on Wednesday, Nov 25, or a Thanksgiving morning 5K like the ADVICE 5K Turkey Trot in Duck, the Surfin' Turkey 5K on Hatteras Island, or the Wild Turkey 5K in Corolla.
  • Skip the grocery line: Order your turkey and sides ahead with a grocery delivery service so everything is waiting when you arrive.
  • Let someone else cook: Several local restaurants offer Thanksgiving dinners or take-home feasts. Reserve early.
  • Walk it off: A post-dinner beach walk at sunset is a tradition you'll want to keep.

Kick Off the Holiday Season

The Friday after Thanksgiving is when the Outer Banks switches into holiday mode, and it all happens fast.

  • Hangin' With Santa: Free visits and photos with Santa at Kitty Hawk Kites at Jockey's Ridge Crossing in Nags Head on Friday, Nov 27 (10 a.m.–2 p.m.) and Saturday, Nov 28 (1–4 p.m.).
  • Kites With Lights: Illuminated kites light up the sky over Jockey's Ridge Crossing on Saturday, Nov 28.
  • Christmas in Corolla: The free Christmas Craft Village fills the lawns of Historic Corolla Park on Nov 27, and Whalehead's Candlelight Christmas Tours start that weekend, with the 1920s mansion decked out for the season.
  • The 12 Bars of Christmas: Festive pop-up bars open across the Outer Banks on Nov 27, the holiday cousin of October's Halloween Island.
  • WinterLights: More than a million lights transform the Elizabethan Gardens in Manteo on select nights from November 20 through December 29, 2026. Tickets are timed-entry and sold online only, and leashed dogs are welcome.

Black Friday and Small Business Saturday are a great time to shop local, too. Downtown Manteo, Duck, and Corolla are full of galleries and boutiques for one-of-a-kind gifts.
