2019 National Running Day 5k Recap
by Jessie S.
Earlier this month on Wednesday, June 5th, running enthusiasts from all over the coast came to Southern Shores, NC to participate in the National Running Day 5k & 1 Mile Road Course Race hosted by The OBX Running Company. This marked another successful National Running Day race on the Outer Banks!
This event, presented by Seaside Vacations, is a great opportunity for athletes to come together and give it their all in a local 5k and 1 mile race through the picturesque town of Southern Shores. The 5k race course began at the MarketPlace Shopping Center where runners had the option of competing in a 7:30 AM morning race or a 6:30 PM evening race. Runners then went to the light at Chicahauk Trail in Southern Shores where they would turn around and return to the finish line. Runners of the 1 Mile Race turned around at a marker in front of Tropical Smoothie.
Global Running Day (once known as National Running Day) began in 2009 and has since been celebrated on the first Wednesday in June every year. Participants from all over the world in 177 different countries pledged to participate this year and in North Carolina, dozens of organizations held races across the state, including the race here in Southern Shores. This global event was created in order to help everyone embrace an active, healthy lifestyle and the hashtag #globalrunningday has been featured over 230,000 times on Instagram!
All racers did a fantastic job and completion medals were handed out to each runner who finished the course. Commemorative trophies were also awarded to the top 3 male and female finishers overall. The 1st place male/female Masters (runners over 40) and 1st place male/female Youth (aged 14 and under) also received trophies. Both the morning and evening races awarded winners separately.
